William (Bill) McMullen of Chinook Systems, Inc. Honored with 2024 BCxA Benner Award

Chinook is proud to announce that Bill McMullen has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Benner Award by the Building Commissioning Association (BCxA). This honor recognizes Bill’s outstanding contributions to making building commissioning standard practice; a testament to his dedication and innovative work that spans over three decades.

Bill has played an instrumental role in the field of building commissioning, markedly improving performance and operational efficiencies of mission critical infrastructure, facilities, and plants across a broad spectrum of industry sectors including defense industrial, federal facilities, energy, financial services, healthcare, higher education, and data centers. His expertise and leadership have had a profound impact on projects globally, with a wide array of climate conditions from South Korea to Alaska, encompassing tens of millions of square feet.

At the heart of Bill’s success is his ability to integrate commissioning with design-build upgrades, operations, maintenance, building automation, and cybersecurity; expertly combining commissioning (Cx) processes with the most stringent requirements to address advanced and always evolving federal government requirements. This full lifecycle approach is exemplified by his leadership in large-scale Cx programs, including continued oversight of one of the largest Ongoing Commissioning (OCx) initiatives at the Pentagon, implemented by Chinook in 2013.

Bill’s commitment to the Cx industry is also evident in his leadership roles and educational efforts. As a two-term President of the BCxA International Board of Directors in 2014 and 2015, he championed Cx practices and played a pivotal role in developing industry standards and credentialing programs. His contributions have earned him both the BCxA President’s Award and the FEMP Energy Management Award.

In addition to his industry leadership, Bill is dedicated to nurturing new talent and sharing his knowledge as an instructor at North Carolina State University, where he teaches Commissioning, Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB), Facility Analytics, and Building Control Systems. He continues to shape future developments in commissioning through his active participation in BCxA Leadership, contributing to training sessions, conference committees, and public speaking engagements.

“We are thrilled to see Bill’s hard work and passion recognized with this esteemed award,” said Wanda Lenkewich, President of Chinook. “His commitment to the industry, innovative thinking, and influence on commissioning technical advancements, sets a high bar for future achievements.”

Bill’s dedication to excellence in Cx aligns perfectly with the legacy of Nancy Benner. He stands as a leading figure in promoting building commissioning as an essential practice, embodying the spirit of the Benner Award with his tireless efforts and groundbreaking innovations.
