Preserving History

Old Patent Office Building, Washington, D.C.

For the Smithsonian Institution, $200 Million

The third oldest building in the nation’s capital has housed injured Civil War soldiers, was the venue for President Lincoln’s second inaugural ball in 1865, and became the home to the Patent Office until 1932. It survived demolition attempts when the Smithsonian Institution took ownership of it in 1958. Now home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and The National Portrait Gallery, the building underwent a massive renovation that was completed in 2006.

Chinook was the commissioning authority on the project and responsible for all aspects of the construction phase and closeout deliverables. We directed all onsite commissioning activities, functional performance testing, and commissioning meetings. All activities were managed with our QuiCx project delivery system, which provided real-time project information and was accessible to more than150 project users.
