Chinook Wind

The Chinook (shi•nook) wind is a warm wind that travels over mountain ranges into the interior regions of the Pacific Northwest during the winter months. The Chinook wind takes on its warm and dry characteristics after losing its moisture on windward slopes. Known as “snow eaters” Chinook winds have been known to raise temperatures by 30˚F providing temporary respite from frigid winters. Stratus clouds that form Chinook arches provide a stunning palette of colors in the sky at sunrise and sunset.
